Hard to believe, but back in September 1973, we at Starving Students did our first job. Yep, we moved some chairs from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA to San Diego for a chiropractor. We did the move in a creaky, old truck, a 1944 Dodge Weapons Carrier a friend gave us. Seriously. Made a whopping $20, and we were thrilled.
As they say, the rest is history. Moving was obviously in our blood, because here we are, still helping people move 47 years later. We must have done something right.
In the early days (light years before social media), we posted handmade flyers on telephone poles to attract customers. That helped, but the majority of our moves came from positive word-of-mouth. Word spread fast and business really picked up. Even big-name celebrities such as Tom Hanks, Stephen Spielberg, Ronald Reagan, Jackson Brown and Billy Idol wanted Starving Student to move them.
We even moved the Star Trek Fan Club in 1974! For that one, we enlisted several of our high school friends for what turned out to be an all-night move. It was fun and we got cool Star Trek T-shirts for a job well done.
Fun: that’s really how it was back in the early day. And you know what? It still is for us. Almost a half-century in and we still have fun and take pride and pleasure knowing your move will go smoothly. It means a lot to us, always will.
